Managing bounces (email delivery errors)

Automatic bounce management

MailUp intelligently recognizes over 1,600 types of delivery errors and reacts accordingly, automatically. Automated bounce management is integrated with the contacts database, allowing - for instance - the automatic unsubscribing of email addresses that report 10 consecutive delivery errors, or that result "full" over 30 times.

Automatic clean-up for better deliverability

Spammers tend to use lists that contain a high number of incorrect addresses (resulting in a high number of bounces). Keeping the number of incorrect addresses in your list as small as possible can lead to higher sender reputation, and therefore higher deliverability (i.e. your messages arrive in the Inbox, rather than the SPAM folder, or not at all). To this extent, MailUp automatically removes address for which it receives a "user unknown" error (error type 550 / 5.1.1). Addresses that are automatically removed can always be found in the Unsubscribed list, so you can review them and correct them, if applicable.

1,600 types of bounces

MailUp can detect over 1,600 different types of bounces, thanks to proprietary bounce detection algorithms and an extensive, multilingual library of errors. It doesn't just handle Hard and Soft bounces, but rather 16 categories of delivery errors, including:
  • Hard Bounce: message cannot be delivered (e.g. 550 Mailbox not found);
  • Soft Bounce: message cannot be delivered at this time (e.g. Mailbox size exceeds quota or Host not found);
  • Transient Bounce: message cannot be delivered at this time, but another attempt is under way (e.g. Warning: message still undelivered after 4 hours. Will keep trying until...);
  • Mail Block: Notification that the receiving server is blocking messages sent by the sender (e.g. 554 Client host rejected);
  • Subscribe: Somebody wishes to be added to the contacts list;
  • Unsubscribe/Remove: The sender wishes to be removed from the contacts list;
  • Challenge-Response: Challenge-Response systems have been created to combat SPAM (e.g. EarthLink SpamBlocker or SpamArrest): they require the sender to take further action to deliver the message. The action is typically something that can only be done manually.

Custom bounce address

MailUp allows you to configure the bounce address (the address that will receive mail delivery errors). This address is often referred to as envelope sender, is not shown to recipients, and is found in the header of the message as Return-Path. Being able to set the bounce address allows you even more control on your reputation, and therefore on your deliverability.

Support for "List-Unsubscribe"

Some mail clients support the new standard "List-Unsubscribe", which displays an "Unsubscribe" button or link directly in the email client. MailUp supports this feature, and you can find all recipients that took advantage of it in the "Unsubscribed" list in your MailUp console.

X-Header handling and parsing

X-Header handling and parsing can be personalized upon request. X-header refers to any non-standard header added to a message (e.g. X-SPAM-Reason).

Always informed

If you want to, you can be copied on an email address of your choice all bounce messages that have been processed by the system.

Automatic feedback-loop management

Thanks to long-term relationships with Internet Service Providers such as Yahoo!, AOL, Hotmail/MSN/Live, and others, when a user of their system clicks on the "SPAM" button instead of unsubscribing, MailUp is notified and automatically unsubscribes the recipient. It also reports the event as a "Complaint" in the reports, so you can track those separately. It is very important that recipients that use this feature are not emailed again, or else you run the risk of being blacklisted.
